Sometimes my daughter (age 10) picks up my work in progress and starts to read it aloud (she's a very good out-loud reader, if that makes sense) - it's interesting because you hear where someone not inside your own head puts the emphasis. I would think the problem (unless you have a face-to-face critique group) is finding someone to read it aloud to you.
I agree with Chris. I like reading out loud so I can check out the rhythm and flow of a sentence or paragraph. Sometimes a sentence will look good on paper, but once you read it out loud, it doesn't work.

I have my face-to-face writing students do this. I sure spotlights punctuation and sentence level errors as well as tiresome repetition of sentence patterns. It's really useful at the final stages of editing.
